Archaeological Museum of Andros
The Archaeological Museum of Andros
The Archaeological Museum of Andros is located in Andros Town, at Theofilos Kairis Square. It was founded in 1981 following the donation of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, with designs of the Greek-American architect Stamos Papadakis. At the Archaeological Museum of Andros, you will see findings by archaeological excavations on the island. More specifically, findings from the archaeological site of Zagora, a collection of sculptures from the Archaic to Roman eras and a collection of sculptures from the pre-Byzantine and Byzantine period are exhibited.
Also, the Archaeological Museum of Andros travels to the history of the island from the Neolithic era to the Byzantine times through photographs and models.
One of the most important foundings is the Hermes of Andros. This is the Hellenistic copy of the homonymous statue of Praxiteles found in 1883 in Paleopolis. Another great exhibit of the museum is the very well preserved copy of the Map of Rigas Feraios. The museum includes headless Kouros and the Roman copy of the torso of Artemis of the 2nd century.
