Grias Lighthouse, also known as the lighthouse of Achla, was built in 1914 and is located in the eastern part of the island at the edge of the bay of Achla beach. Access to it is by car from the Monastery of St. Nicholas by inaccessible dirt road.
The History of Grias Lighthouse
The stone Lighthouse of Gria, first operated in 1914 with oil as its source of energy, with characteristic red, one glimpse every two minutes and a flare of 14 nautical miles.
During World War II it remained switched off and reopened in 1945 with oil as its energy source again. In 1984 the lighthouse was electrified, the oil machinery was replaced and functioned as an automatic electric. Its characteristic is a white glimpse every 20 seconds and a flare of 25 nautical miles. The height of the tower is 12 meters. Optics and machinery of the old lighthouse are kept in the Kaireion library of Chora.
