Kaireios Library in Andros

Kaireios Library was founded in 1987 by presidential decree as a non-profit legal entity of private law. It was created in honor of Theophilos Kairis, one of the most important intellectuals of the revolution of 1821. He was a great teacher and declared the revolution in Andros in 1821, as a member of the Filiki Eteria. Also, Theophilos Kairis founded a higher school in Andros in where he taught philology, philosophy, mathematics and astronomy.

Today, the operation of the Kaireios Library is based more on donations and at times on funding received from the Ministry of Culture. Inside the library, there are about 3.000 books from the private collection of Theophilos Kairis. Also, there are many rare editions, manuscripts, historical archives, works of art and a small archaeological collection. Library halls are from another era and those who love reading will be enchanted. During the summer there are exhibitions, literary and musical events.
