Archaeological Site of Zagora in Andros

The geometric settlement of Zagora in Andros is located on the northwest side of the island on the plateau of a peculiar and quite steep peninsula, at an altitude of 160m. and dates back to the 900-700 BC century BC. The settlement of Zagora was an advanced settlement of the Geometric period, which had urban planning and a special drinking water storage system.

During the excavations, a large part of the geometric settlement (10th-8th century BC) was discovered, protected by a strong wall to the mainland, 110m long. The entrance to the settlement was through a large gate, which was reconstructed during the 6th century. BC, when the temple was built.

The sanctuary, whose foundation dates back to the 8th century BC, continued to operate until the 5th century BC, although the settlement had been abandoned around 700 BC. The temple, which was built around 575-500 BC, is a megaro-shape with a closed pronao and a cella, which enclosed the old altar. Perhaps this is where Athena was worshipped. The findings of the settlement are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Andros.

You can reach the Zagora peninsula after a walk of about 45 minutes, following the path that starts from Stavropeda. There is a signpost of the path and the route is very interesting. The ancient settlement of Zagora is located on the steep plateau (160 meters high) of the homonymous peninsula.
